One of the goals of the organization is to inform the public about neoplastic diseases and bone marrow donations, which can be life-saving for children and adults who have cancer. Hematopoietic stem cells or bone marrow transplantation is an established treatment for the treatment of several serious haematological, neoplastic and genetic diseases.

The goal is to replace the abnormal bone marrow with healthy cells, taken from a relative or non-relative volunteer donor and create in the recipient a new, healthy hematopoietic system. Only 30% of patients find a compatible donor within their family. For the rest, an unrelated donor should be sought. Specifically, in our country of the approximately 200 patients transplanted annually, most receive a transplant from an unrelated volunteer donor. Grafts from volunteer donors that Greek patients, children and adults receive, the majority of them come from abroad, because the number of Greek volunteer donors is small. This is not due to indifference and a lack of social sensitivity, but a lack of information. So with regard to the part of informing the public about bone marrow donation, Orizondas has been active since the first years of its operation to inform, raise awareness and attract potential volunteer donors.

During the last five years our organization has been more active and organized, with a team of trained volunteers and always with the contribution of individuals, school communities, businesses, organizations and associations of our city and of course with the necessary cooperation with the Blood Donation Department of the General Hospital of Chania “Saint George”, with the Samaritan Corps of the ESA of Chania, the” Vision of Hope “Association and the” Give Life”Center. Five years of many informative actions, more than 8,500 records of volunteer bone marrow donor candidates and 27 compatible donors who were lucky enough to offer hope and give a second chance at life to a fellow human being.
